                                                                                                                                                    This issue of Senior Times encourages you to start looking at long-term planning for your healthcare and your retirement. Social Security offers retirement, disability, and survivors benefits. Medicare provides health insurance. Because these services are often related, you may not know which agency to contact for help. The chart on page 19 can help you quickly figure out who to contact.
You will also find information on when the best time to retire would be for you and what your full retirement age is. No matter when you choose to retire, Medicare is a different matter. The magic age is 65, with few exceptions. Your initial enrollment period starts three months before your birth month, the month you turn 65, and three months after your birth month. Get ready because there will be a lot of mail coming your way; not just for getting started but also the annual enrollment period for Medicare D starting October 15 and run- ning through December 7. A MMAP counselor can help you understand all the changes. Call 1-800-803-7174 to schedule an appointment in your area. Your new perscription coverage begins January 1, 2024.
