In working with family caregivers, one thing seems to rise to the top a great deal of the time, is that the expec- tation and what is received are two totally different things.
Anne Clark, Special to Senior Times SETTING THE EXPECTATION!
Now this comes in different forms whether it’s a doctor’s visit, a home health situation, a conversation with family, as well as other areas. The main family caregiver wants or needs one thing and something different is received. It is not anybody’s fault so please know this is not finger pointing; it is a lesson we all need to learn.

When you expect a certain end result – meaning, expecting someone to react the way you would or to do tasks the way you would, but we do not commu- nicate it, we leave so much room for misinterpretation. Let me give you an example, when we work with clients in the Community Care Options program, we instruct clients to make a list of the light housekeeping tasks they would like to have completed.
The same is true with doctor’s visits; make a list – let the doctor see what your concerns are. They are the medi- cal experts and can determine what the priorities should be concerning your health, yet you do have a say. It is very important that your medical care team knows what you are really concerned about – they will not know that if you do not tell them.
My list may look something like this, and I’m making this very simple: Wash the dishes, do the laundry, sweep and mop the floor, dust, clean the bath- room, etc.
Open communication is very import- ant in any relationship and that includes working relationships and those relationships built on services being offered.
When I was taught how to do house- work, I was taught to dust first, sweep and mop afterwards so you sweep up the dust, separate my laundry by colors, When I wash my dishes, I let them air dry – I have a way I like things done. But did I communicate that just by making a list?
The goal for Senior Health Partners, and the services provided, is to be sure you are getting the best benefit of the service being provided, whether it is exercise, education, a service in your home, whatever the case may be.
