White Blue Foundation
By: Dave Morgan, Chair, Red White Blue Foundation
I get asked the question about how did the Calhoun County Red White Blue Foundation got started and just what does it do. Well in short here are the answers.
Brenda Hunt and the Battle Creek Community Foundation. Together, with Brenda, we formed the Calhoun County Red White Blue Foundation. From there we needed to form a sit- ting board to oversee future events and fundraising so we began bringing together an extraordinary group of pro Veteran members of our com- munity. Our board members include General Robert Secrist, Colonel Frank Walker, and Steve Frisbie, all who were part of the original event in Pennfield Charter Township, and also Colonel Frank Walker, Brian Wensauer, Jon Barnes, Kara Beer, T.R Shaw, Aaron Edlefson, Jean Wixson, Del Kilbourne, and Sam Gray.
As a United States Air Force Veteran, I have always looked for ways to support our Veterans and those currently serving today. One of the areas I have always felt is import- ant is as a Veteran it is also very valuable to reach out to our youth and tell our stories and to make them aware of the many opportunities serving in the United States Armed Forces brings you, both while serv- ing, and throughout your life. There simply is no more honorable title
you will ever have in life than United States Veteran.
In a very short time the Calhoun County Red White Blue Foundation has been able to not only assist many pro Veteran friendly groups, both financially and administratively, but has also become a leader in bringing many moving and special events to the Calhoun County area. In 2021, the Calhoun County Red White Blue Foundation was selected to be one of 31 organizations, out of over 1500 applicants, to host The Wall That Heals – Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Over 20,000 people visited The
Wall That Heals while on display at Harper Creek Community Schools.

When I was elected Pennfield Charter Township Supervisor in 2016 one of the first things we did was start the Pennfield Armed Forces Appreciation Day event where we honored every graduating student from Pennfield High School who was entering into the Armed Forces. Our program in 2017 honored nine students and in 2018 we honored 13 students, all who decided to serve their country. Both years we had between 250-400 residents attend
the ceremonies. Both years we had students from other schools that
were also entering the Armed Forces attend to support their now brothers and sisters in service from Pennfield High School. Although we did acknowledge the students from the other schools as well it was Calhoun County Commissioner Steve Frisbie who came to me and said we should make our event countywide and in 2019 that is exactly what we did. In 2019, at WK Auditorium, we hon- ored 52 students from many schools throughout the county, including the Michigan Youth Challenge Academy.
It was in 2019 that I saw with
the expansion of the Armed Forces Appreciation Day event a clear need and potential to do other events
to honor our Veterans. I decided
we needed a funding arm in order
to go to the next level so enter
We can never thank or support our Veterans and their families enough. They are the true heroes of our com- munity and nation.
