This issue offers inspiration and suggestions for pursuing healthy, active aging from movement and exercise to better hearing and connecting to the world around you. It’s never too late to start an exercise program. While daunting, realize that you can start slowly. Over time you can work up to the goals that you and your health care providers have set. This can help with managing weight as well as keeping chronic conditions manageable. Healthy living and advances in technology have led to greater longevity, and with that, people are looking for a higher quality of life with prolonged independence. Learn more about healthy aging at the upcoming Calhoun County Senior Services Annual Senior Expo event May 18 at Kellogg Arena from 9am-1pm. Parking is free in the ramp.
I encourage you to find a reason to get up and get moving regularly. Why? Because there is evidence that being too sedentary, such as prolonged time in front of a TV, is perhaps as harmful to your heart health as not exercising at all. In fact, research shows that sitting still for long periods of time can cancel out the effects of 30 minutes of exercise. That doesn’t mean that you can’t sit to eat a meal or read a book but maybe you should also get up to work a puzzle, weed the garden, or walk in the neighborhood. Here’s to healthy aging!
