 Dear Readers,
Thank you for reading my editorial.
can use Michigan’s Nutrition Education Program. The state supports education sessions held at senior centers and con- gregate meal sites. At these sessions, all seniors are welcome to learn about what they can do to stay healthy and retain their healthy lifestyle.
My goal with these is to inform you on what is going on in the state government and hopefully improve how the state government works for you.
The state is not just focused on talking about food though, it also pro- vides great opportunities to get food. Through the Senior Project FRESH program, seniors who are within 185% of the poverty line can get coupons for healthy vegetables at farmers’ markets. This program provides a fantastic oppor- tunity, not only to eat healthier but also to do some fun farmers' market shopping over the summer.
I hope that you are having a great spring. Over the past few days, I have caught myself sneezing a few times, so
I know that the trees are starting to bud. As bad as the allergies may be, my walk up the steps of the Michigan Capitol are far more delightful now that I cannot see my breath freezing in the air.
Before I delve into some of the ways the State of Michigan helps seniors,
I first want to wish everyone a happy Older Americans Month! Have a great May!
It is important to stay involved and updated on what is happening in state government. To keep up to date, you
can visit my website at housedems.com/ jim-haadsma/ or follow me on Facebook @HouseJimH. If you have any ques- tions, comments, concerns, or need help navigating a state government program, please reach out to me. You can email me at jimhaadsma@house.mi.gov or call my office at (517) 373-2616. On the first Saturday of each month, I do open coffee hours at Mr. Don's in Springfield from 9-11am and at Stirling Books and Brew in Albion from 1-2:30 pm.
Michigan is dedicated to ensuring that every Senior can live a happy, healthy, and active life. It is why Michigan has several programs dedicated to senior nutrition. Through Michigan’s Nutrition Counseling Program, seniors with nutri- tional risks can receive guidance from a registered dietician on their diet and eat- ing habits. The dieticians often create a personalized nutrition plan which caters specifically to the person’s needs.
While Michigan’s Nutrition Counseling Program is only available to seniors with health risks, all seniors
Have an excellent Spring!
