CALHOUN COUNTY REDUCES, REUSES, AND RECYCLES
By: Helen Guzzo, LMSW, Manager, Calhoun County Senior Services
recycling center for no cost. Located at 14800
P Dr. N. in Marshall, the center is available to residents Monday through Friday 7am-4:30pm and 7am-noon on Saturdays. To participate in this program, residents must obtain a program card to verify residency through their local municipality, township, or request one online from Calhoun County. The County also distrib- utes them by calling (269) 969-6395. Recyclers must stop at the scale house and show staff their program card before they can enter the recy- cling center. Recycling goes into a compactor and there is a roll-off available for material that can’t fit. Cardboard should be broken down and no bagged recycling is allowed.
Do you, or a loved one, use needles, syring- es, or auto injectors for medical conditions such as diabetes? Individuals with medical conditions that require the use of such materials may have accumulated a stockpile of sharps due to dispos- al limitations. Calhoun County has three sharps drop box locations: Albion City Hall, Marshall Regional Law Enforcement Center, and the
City of Battle Creek Police Department. These sharps container boxes allow county residents
to dispose of their medical supplies properly and safely with no cost. These locations have bins for both sharps’ collections and metal bins for safe disposal of medications. The sharps must be sealed in hard plastic containers such

as a sharps box or laundry detergent bottle, no loose needles are allowed for the safety of disposal staff. Sharps are also accepted at our Household Hazardous Waste Events held in May, September, and October.
Calhoun County offers several recycling options to fit resident’s needs. The County has
a staffed recycling center located in Marshall at the Calhoun County Road Department. Located at 13300 15 Mile Road, it is open Tuesdays 12-4pm and Wednesdays 9am-1pm. Recyclables need to be sorted by type of material and can be placed in bags or boxes. The center is allowing residents to use reusable containers again, but staff ask that residents follow the sorting direc- tions. Residents drive up to the recycle center and staff unload their car or truck. This center
is the only Styrofoam recycling drop-off in Calhoun County. Clarence Township’s recycling center, located at 27052 R Dr. N, operates the third weekend of each month.
Spring has arrived, and it may be time for some cleaning around the house. This usually leads to a large pile of “junk” that you do not know what to do with. Rather than throwing
it in the trash, participate in Calhoun County’s next event! Electronics, scrap metal, and scrap tire collection will be available on Monday, May 8 at Ketchum Field in Albion from 12-5:30pm.
The County has also started a mobile recy- cling trailer that is at the Athens Township Hall, 130 E. Burr Oak, St., on the first Thursday of the month from 1-4pm; Sheridan Township Hall, 13355 29 Mile Rd., on the second Thursday of the month from 1-4pm; and the Tekonsha Township Hall, 166 Spires Parkway, on the third Thursday of the month from 1-4pm. The trailer has labeled compartments, and recy- clers place their own material into the proper compartment. Staff are onsite to answer ques- tions and assist the recyclers. Having your mate- rial sorted, speeds up the recycling process.
A reminder that Calhoun County’s Senior Services Annual Senior Expo event is May
18 at Kellogg Arena from 9am-1pm. This
is a free educational event for seniors in the county to learn about services that are avail- able to encourage healthy aging. Sarah Lundy, Calhoun County’s Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator, will be staffing the recycling booth to answer any questions about services avail- able to help County residents reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Additionally, Calhoun County has a program that allows residents to use the C&C Landfill
