Oftentimes the reality of determining care needs is focused on the solo ager; a person that now lives alone or that may have extended family not living in the area to support them. Solutions for the solo ager could include building a social and community network but also developing connections by bringing programs and services into the home, joining a senior center or other group with similar interests, or even volunteering. Furthermore, an intentional transition to a housing community can help to build new crucial connections. The reality is that solutions expand in relation to the time invested. When it comes to housing, the best planning occurs well before you need it; prepare early. Engaging early in conversations helps you to be in control of future choices. Invite family into the conversation. When you make intentional decisions together, the focus remains on you, even if an urgent situation arises. Communicate with friends, caregivers, and health care providers. Gather input. Interview in-home providers. Visit area communities and facilities, both planned and unannounced. Continue your search until you can prepare a list that feels right to you. Tuck it away and revisit it on an intentional basis. No matter your choice, there will be an investment cost. Renovations, technology, direct care in the home, or moving to a new location all have financial costs. But there is also the cost of doing nothing. When physical and environmental conditions are neglected there is the cost of reduced health, injury, and isolation. The cost to family dynamics occurs when conversations are avoided. Don%u2019t limit your options because you choose not to have the uncomfortable conversations. They do get easier each time. Maybe you are searching for solutions for a loved one or friend. Read on; you will find ways to start a conversation, start your search, or develop a checklist to bring along to nearby adult care facilities. As an advocate, preparation is key. Even if a decision is thrust upon you this guide will help explain your options and help you with solutions.
