Medicare doesn%u2019t cover room and board if you get general hospice services while you%u2019re a resident of a nursing home or a hospice residential facility. If you%u2019re eligible, Medicaid may pay for some services that Medicare doesn%u2019t cover, like personal care assistance at home. Medicare doesn%u2019t pay for 24-hour assistance if you get hospice services at home. For more information on Medicare%u2019s coverage of hospice care and who qualifies, visit Medicare.gov. Rehabilitation (rehab) is therapeutic care for persons requiring intensive physical, occupational, or speech therapy. Rehab may be provided by home care professionals, in a rehab facility, or a skilled nursing facility. When provided at a skilled nursing facility, the intent of rehab is to help the aging adult regain skills and movement, while under supervision, in order to return back to their home. If the hospital where care was provided is assisting you with finding a facility for your loved one to rehab be aware that you do not have to accept the first facility they find. You can so %u2018NO%u2019 to the first option they offer and request another. The first facility available may not be convenient for you. Work with the hospital discharge planer or social worker to set up the best choice, not necessarily the first choice available. You can also offer suggestions for where you want your loved one to go. Respite Care %u2013 Some nursing homes, residential care facilities, and hospice care facilities provide respite care. You may also receive respite care in your home. Respite care is short-term assistance so the primary caregiver can rest. Medicare covers inpatient respite care for up to five days if you%u2019re getting covered hospice care services. Room and board are covered for inpatient respite care and during short-term hospital stays. If you%u2019re eligible, Medicaid will pay for some of these services at home that aren%u2019t covered by Medicare. Respite provides caregivers with needed renewal time so they can continue to support their care partners long into the future. Keep in mind that if you are the care receiver you may be unhappy with the thought of someone other than your loved one providing care from time to time. But the reality is that caregivers often suffer from serious health conditions because they do not get appropriate care and treatment for fear of upsetting the care recipient. Not only should you gratefully allow time for respite but as a care recipient, you should make it happen so your care provider%u2019s health does not suffer.Publishers Note: Talk to your family, doctor or other health care provider, counselor, or a social worker for help deciding what kind of care is best for you right now and in the long-term.
