Annual United Way campaigns
are opportunities through payroll deduction to make donations to create positive community improvements. Contributions may always be made by cash or check, but payroll deduction allows for a pledge to be made that might be bigger because it is paid over a year’s time. United Way campaigns often hold special events to create
fun, excitement, and enthusiasm for generous giving. Calhoun County is unique in that it contains three United Way organizations: Albion-Homer, Marshall, and the United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region (UWBCKR).
Recently, the United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region announced grant awards of almost $6.3 million to 110 area programs admin- istered by 65 partner organizations
in the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo region to help treat children who have experienced trauma, improve infant health, address hunger and food inse- curity, and help provide stable housing to those in need. According to Alyssa Stewart, UWBCKR vice president of impact and engagement, “These grants are targeted investments in programs and partners to get at the root of the toughest challenges we face in our regional community.”

Marcia Starkey, the Albion- Homer United Way executive director said, “By contributing to the Albion- Homer United Way, we can change our story in these two communities, Living United is the way we help all of us to better our lives.” For more informa- tion, see www.albionhomeruw.org.

BUILDING A STRONGER COMMUNITY
I’ve volunteered to co-chair the Calhoun County government’s annu-
al United Way campaign because I believe in the ability of people working together to solve community problems. I believe that working together donors can have a greater impact. I trust the volunteers and staff of the United Ways in Albion-Homer, Marshall, and the Battle Creek/Kalamazoo Region to partner with nonprofit and government agencies to fund the best strategies for helping those in need.
I believe if we all do our part to give, advocate, and volunteer that we will have a healthier, stronger community.
United Way improves lives by mobiliz- ing the caring power of the community to advance the common good, where every individual has the opportunity
to succeed and the entire community thrives from it.” In 2019, the Marshall United Way funded over 20 organiza- tions with $146,000 in grants to orga- nizations working in Marshall includ- ing the Fountain Clinic, Marshall Area Community Services, Mobile Meals, 6th grade camp, and the 4th grade trip to Mackinac Island.
