of the pandemic. This new classification by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services identifies three phases of pandemic response: Readi- ness (pre-surge), Response (surge) and Recovery (post-surge). As part of post- surge, individuals are encouraged to make decisions about masks and testing based on individual risk assessment.
On Feb. 21, the Calhoun County Public Health Department lifted its health orders pertaining to quarantine in K-12 educational settings and for the general public. To see this new guidance, visit calhouncountymi.gov/covid.
Since last month, the Public Health Department also provided KN95 masks to numerous organizations countywide to be distributed for free to residents. These high-filtration masks are the best possible tools to prevent virus transmis- sion, and continue to be a useful tool for people at high risk of serious illness from COVID-19. For a list of the loca- tions where masks are available, visit the press release for KN95 distribution at https://conta.cc/3o6TxFc.

hours clearing and salting the roads to make travel safer for drivers. County roads are prioritized for plowing based on traffic volumes. The order that roads are cleared are, state trunklines, prima- ry roads, major local roads, and then residential and subdivision streets. This explains why when we receive exces- sive amounts of snow, your road might be more snow-covered until after main roadways are cleared. The Road Depart- ment offers many tools for you to stay informed during the next snow event. An interactive snowplow tracker maps where plows have been in 30-minute and one- and three-hour increments, which can help with understanding what road conditions will be like for one’s com- mute. Also, a text notification service is available to receive important updates on your phone about Road Department op- erations. Links to both of these services, and more information about winter maintenance, can be found on the Winter Maintenance website, https://calhoun- countymi.gov/departments/road_depart- ment/snowplowing.php
As February ended, the Calhoun County Treasurer’s Office shifted into its busiest season. Starting March 1, unpaid 2021 property taxes within all cities, townships, and villages were sent to the County Treasurer’s Office. Additionally, unpaid 2020 property taxes that have been with the County Treasurer’s Office for a year will face forfeiture, and if con- tinued unpaid, foreclosure. Anyone who is in either of these situations and feeling unsure about repayment should contact
the Treasurer’s Office Foreclosure Prevention staff now. There are hardship extension and financial opportunities available. The Treasurer’s Office can be reached at (269) 781-0807 or in the Cal- houn County Building at 315 W. Green Street, in Marshall.

On Thursday, April 14 from Noon-5:30pm at Bailey Park in Battle Creek, residents can bring electronics and scrap metal for recycling. For Albion residents, the electronics and scrap metal collection will take place Thursday, June 30 from Noon-5:30pm, at Ketchum Field. For a list of accepted materials, visit calhoun- countymi.gov/recycling and click on Recycling Events. Scrap Tire collec- tions, as well as a Household Hazardous Waste collection, are still being sched- uled and will be posted on the events website as soon as they’re finalized. Keep in mind, the C&C Landfill is a year-round free recycling opportunity for residents. Visit the County’s website to request a recycling pass, which will be sent to your home, and then you can bring recycling to the C&C Landfill in Convis Township for free.
