However, an AFC or HFA is not required to accept a resident receiving SSI. If you are considering moving into an AFC, HFA, or unlicensed assisted living, one of the questions you should be asking yourself is, %u201cHow long can I afford to live in this facility?%u201d You should consider not only current costs and fees, but future increases. You also need to think about how your care needs may change and how that will impact costs. And if private funds run out, it may be necessary to move to another facility. The starting cost of an AFC home is about $3,300 monthly. The average costs for assisted living in our region is around $4,500 per month. Costs for dementia care is even greater and begins around $7,000 per month and increases as skilled nursing care is needed. For most, additional support will be necessary to stay long-term. See pages 22-25 for a more detailed list of questions to ask before moving in. Government Assistance - AFC/HFA/Assisted Living %u2013 Some government assistance is available for residents of adult foster care homes and homes for the aged that meet strict eligibility standards. Additional assistance may be available for individuals who have a developmental disability or who have a mental illness. Be sure to ask at facilities you are considering. Medicare does not pay for room and board. However, it will continue to pay for covered medical expenses, such as hospital care, prescribed home health services, and doctor visits. There is one exception to that rule. Medicare PACE is a government program that helps qualifying older adults get the medical and social services they need to continue living in their homes as they age.Medicaid may be available to some residents. It will not pay the fees for room and board, but it may pay medical expenses including prescription medicines. Medicaid will, however, support qualifying individuals in their home environment, which could be an approved residential setting, through the MI Choice Waiver or the Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Waiver with appropriate services.With the right foundation from MI Options, you can look at the future with confidence and peace of mind.
