Dear Friend,
Thank you for reading my editorial.
My goal with these is to inform you on what’s going on in state government and hopefully improve how the state gov- ernment works for you.
Recently, the state has taken a big step toward helping seniors achieve financial independence as well. This February, the Michigan Legislature passed a bill repealing the retirement tax on Michigan seniors. This bill will help thousands of Michiganders receiving money from pensions. As a co-sponsor of the bill, I am excited to see the addi- tional financial freedom seniors in our district can achieve because of the bill.
Over the winter, the state government has been very productive. However, as great as the winter has been, I can’t wait to see the trees bud and the weather warm up. My garden seems to be call- ing to me louder and louder every day, and I’m not sure if I can bear another week without flowers!
The State of Michigan provides
a few important services for seniors wishing to keep their independence. Through the Home Help Program, individuals who qualify for Medicaid may be able to get money to help with several important at home activities. These activities include eating, bathing, grooming, and moving throughout your home. The state may also provide direct assistance with things such as laundry, housework, shopping, and meal prepa- ration.
It’s important to stay involved and updated on what's happening in state government. To keep up to date, you can visit my website at housedems.com/ jim-haadsma/ or follow me on Facebook @HouseJimH. If you have any ques- tions, comments, concerns, or need help navigating a state government program, please reach out to me. You can email me at jimhaadsma@house.mi.gov or call my office at (517) 373-2616. On the first Saturday of each month, I do open coffee hours at Mr. Don's in Springfield from 9-11am and at Stirling Books and Brew in Albion from 1-2:30pm.
Michigan is also committed to helping seniors with home repairs and improvements. Grants for home repairs are available through several sources including the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and

of Leonard Bernstein’s wonderful music will not disappoint. The compel- ling piece of music by Steven Reineke, Pilatus: Mountain of Dragons, conveys the awe-inspiring grandeur of Pilatus Mountain in Switzerland. It opens with the brass slowly blowing air through their instruments, as if to simulate the mountain wind, or perhaps the breath of dragons! Use your imagination!
Among the various TV and film themes, the audience will enjoy Symphonic Dances from “Fiddler on the Roof,” Great Movie Marches, A Disney Spectacular, The Magnificent Seven, and Gettysburg. Composer John Williams is famous for providing unforgettable music for movies and the band will be performing two of them: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Midway March.
