assessment that can really help in determining what services might help with your living situation. By assessing the needs, it can be determined if you require minimal assistance with minimal health conditions or whether you require more hands-on services to keep you in your own home as long as you are safe. Safety is key at any age!

As health starts to decline, there are many different options we need to look at to keep our independence. One mis- take we make – and we all make it – is thinking if we get any type of assistance, then we are no longer independent; or jumping to my person needs to go to a facility. Honestly, in most cases, they do not need to go to a facility and finding assistance is how we KEEP our inde- pendence. Another area that we need to do some soul searching in the financial area. Let’s talk!
For eligible community members, Community Care Options can offer two hours of light housekeeping a week (or four hours every other week) as well

When Reality Hits?
By: Anne Clark, Program Manager, Senior Health Partners
Our program receives many calls from community members, especially children of older adults, inquiring about getting help for parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, a neighbor, etc. and typi- cally the first question is about the need for assisted living. When we get into the discussion more, there are needs but the fact that it will most likely be private pay causes the conversation to take a turn.
If hands-on assistance is needed there is still opportunity for services to help keep you in the home for as long as you can safely stay there. Calhoun County
is fortunate to have the Senior Care Partners Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (P.A.C.E.) in our com- munity as well as the MI Choice Waiver Program that is coordinated through Milestone Senior Services and CareWell Services, Region 3B Area Agency on Aging.
Calhoun County is blessed with agencies that can help walk this journey and talk about needs and how can you fulfill those needs. Whether it is a little assistance as their physical abilities and health change or needing personal care because activities of daily living (bathing or showering, dressing, getting in and
out of bed or a chair, walking, using the toilet, or eating) cannot be met, there are services to help.
The best was to understand what might be needed is to start with an in-home assessment through SHP to get assistance with what might be needed. Please remember if you call for someone else, we must have that person’s permis- sion before coming to the home. Call (269) 441-0948 to talk to an experienced staff member.
Senior Health Partners (SHP) offers a program called Community Care Options; these services offer an in-home
