Lighthouse Tour
Senior Times - June 2021
Lake Michigan
By: Adrienne Brown-Reasner, West Michigan Tourist Association
Vacationers have been looping the lake for generations, but the official “Lake Michigan Circle Tour” route was not established until the 1980s when the Michigan Department of Transportation teamed up with the West Michigan Tourist Association to create the route and its official guidebook. Along the tour, travelers will find more than 100 lighthouses, countless islands, unique attractions, parks and natural areas, miles of glorious beaches, quaint harbor towns, and one “modern marvel” – the Mackinac Bridge.
are landmarks of history for those on land.
The lighthouses found on the Great Lakes number 388 in total and are dis- persed as follows:
• Lake Michigan – 97
• Lake Huron – 95
• Lake Superior – 75
• Lake Erie – 68
• Lake Ontario – 53
Boat around Lake Huron's Thunder Bay Island for glimpses of its red-and- white lighthouse. Visit Lake Superior's Big Bay Point Lighthouse for a rare opportunity to overnight in a historic light. Learn about Great Lakes ship- wrecks and the keepers who tried to prevent them at lighthouse and mari- time museums in Mackinaw City, South Haven, Ludington and Whitefish Point.
Interestingly, 300 of these 388 are still active aids to navigation today. While we will claim the majority of them in Michigan, the reality is that they span eight states and two coun- tries. The breakdown includes:
• Ontario – 94
• Michigan – 109
• Wisconsin – 39
• New York – 21
• Ohio – 14
To help others learn about the signif- icant role of the lighthouse the only sin- gle-nation Circle Tour (Lake Michigan being the only Great Lake completely within the US), the Lake Michigan Circle Tour also has the most mileage of any Circle Tour in the state. The full circle tour driving route around Lake Michigan is now available online, and website visitors may also download a

Short and squat, or tall and lean, each of Michigan's uniquely-beautiful lighthouses plays its part in keeping the Great Lakes safe. With 3,200 miles of shoreline and one of the nation's most active waterways, it's no wonder that Michigan claims more lighthouses than any other state in the country. Climb Ludington's Big Sable Point lighthouse, one of Michigan's tallest, for sweeping views of Lake Michigan.

Circle Tour
Vacationers have been looping the lake for generations, but the official Lake Michigan Circle Tour route was not established until 1987, when the Michigan Department of Transportation teamed up with the West Michigan Tourist Association to create the route and, the following year, the official guidebook.
Working in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Transportation, the West Michigan Tourist Association helped to make the first of the official Great Lakes Circle Tours a reality, and the first publication was released in 1988 as a 52-page guide book. The guide book was transformed into a map in 2007, and the driving route can now be found online at WMTA.org/Lake-Michigan- Lighthouse-Map-Circle-Tour.
The official Lake Michigan Circle Tour route is designated by green “Circle Tour” signs placed at 10 mile intervals. Whenever you spot a brown “Harbor Tour” sign along the route, it’s your signal to take a side trip to explore one of the dozens of port communities along the Lake Michigan shore.
