We can all agree, 2020 has proved to be a challenging year! The senior living industry has experienced its own unique set of obstacles for residents, families, and staff. Visitor restrictions, suspension of group activities and com- munal dining, new screening practices, not to mention, keeping abreast of the ever-changing Executive Orders, has kept all of us on our toes!
who aren't able, or simply don’t feel comfortable going out to a doctor’s office. Additional medical services, such as, physical therapy, skilled nurs- ing and hospice continue to happen in the community to ensure no resident falls behind on necessary medical treat- ments.
A tremendous benefit for residents in an assisted living environment during the pandemic is that many of the services individuals traditionally have travelled for, are now being brought to residents in the building.
the focus on the mental well-being of each resident has not been overlooked during the COVID pandemic – even with the complicated restrictions involved.
Dockerty Health Care System is a family-owned company comprised of eight assisted living communities in Michigan, which include, Woodland Terrace in Niles, Coloma, and Bridgman; Beacon Pointe Memory Care in Portage; Traverse Manor in Traverse City; Beacon Pointe Assisted Living opening in Richland this fall; and of course, Heritage Assisted Living and Reflections Memory Care, located on Helmer Road, right here in Battle Creek.
Medications are being delivered and staff continue to facilitate communica- tion with outside medical providers to set up telehealth options for residents

  Great Care
During COVID
From the beginning of the COVID- 19 pandemic, staff have been adminis- tering daily resident screenings, which include temperature checks, asking about typical COVID signs and symp- toms, in additional to, overall conversa- tions with residents to note any changes in habits and behaviors. Each commu- nity continues to screen each employee and all medical personnel entering the building each day.
And, of course, there is food! Three balanced and nutritional meals (and a snack!) are provided daily to each indi- vidual in his or her private apartment. While both residents and staff are anxious to once again enjoy communal dining – the focus will continue to be on safety and following the recom- mendations from the State of Michigan health experts until we can once again resume ‘normal’ life.
The Dockerty family is fortunate to have incredible employees at each of their eight communities. Their days are spent ensuring the social and spiritual needs of each individual are met or exceeded. Residents who are physi- cally able are encouraged to get out of their apartments and walk, whether it be throughout one of the buildings or outside. The Life Enrichment depart- ments have been providing one-on-one activities specific to what each resident enjoys, which have included daily devotions, setting up puzzle tables in apartments and hallways, crafts, bingo, theme days, such as, Grandparents Day, National Back to School Picture Day, and much more! Rest assured,
As fall and winter quickly approach, I would encourage anyone who is curi- ous about an assisted living option to call one of our campuses today. Our staff can talk you through what moving in looks like today – how our building is operating currently, and what visi- tation options would be available for family and friends.
