If there ever was a time to be still... now is the time. All this frenetic anx- iety about everything from surviving with enough toilet paper to the very real issue of becoming ill with Covid 19 – we’re doing anything but “being still.” It’s aggravating to me, because I believe that there is a biased “media” that’s constantly hyping everything that’s going wrong at once, and raising the anxiety level in our nation and the world. It’s also aggravating that there are many who are very quick to blame anyone in a leadership position. So much for my venting of my frustra- tions...
So let me take your mind away from the crisis with a great strategy that was used by Mr. Fred Rogers. (Be sure to see the new movie about Mr. Rogers, played by Tom Hanks. We watched it on Amazon Prime last week.) The strat- egy for children that Mr. Rogers used when they experience an emergency or crisis is to look for the people who are helping. The firemen, the policemen, the doctors, and the nurses. Look at what they are doing to help. Are they helping? Absolutely! What are they doing that helps? Lots!
You know what? I think we’re at our best when we are “being” in rela- tionship with the One who created us. The One who knows us better than
we know ourselves. The time to stop and relish being in that relationship is known as “Sabbath,” traditionally the seventh day, which is the day that God rested after creating everything. And then he commanded us to, “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.” Note that this is the only commandment
of the big 10 that asks us to “remem- ber”...because God knew we would probably forget.
The Village of
And yet, there’s no question... this is a crisis.

But we Americans are so into “doing” something, when in reality we were created by God not just to “do” but also to “be” and become. Maybe that’s why we are “human beings,” not
The question is, will we be any better “images” of the Lord of Life who made us as a result of this crisis? And, what will we have learned about ourselves, our relationship with the Creator, and how will we better be an image of the Holy One who made us?
BE STILL
Rev. Dr. James Gysel, Special to Senior Times human doings!
Can we support the helpers in some way? No question! We can pray, we can give them food; we can send them messages of support and love. There are lots of things we can “do.”
“Be still, and know that I am God.” - Psalm 46:10

This “valley of the shadow of the coronavirus” is the perfect time to prac- tice and dedicate time for “Sabbath.” A time out from the routine, and a time to be still. But also a new time to think, to read, to pray, to connect with others all going through this same issue together.
Faithfully yours, ~ Jim Gysel
