I hope all is well with you and your loved ones. Spring is right around the corner, and I cannot wait. Until then, let’s take advantage of the winter activ- ities at hand. Make sure to encourage the younger ones in your family to get outside and enjoy some of the area snow-related businesses. Skiing, snow- shoeing, and winter hiking are just a few winter activities that can be done in Calhoun County.

I wanted to talk to you this month about aging. Aging is something each of us are dealing with, whether it’s personally or with a family member. Thankfully, in Michigan, we have support systems in place that assist the aging population and their families to navigate the system with ease.
On a national level, AARP, the National Institute on Aging, Eldercare Locator, and more are available for you on topics that range from legal and financial support to assistance with home repair, transportation, and care- giving services.
Having a variety of positive social supports can contribute to psycholog- ical and physical wellness of aging individuals. Support from others can be important in reducing stress, increasing physical health, and defeating psycho- logical problems such as depression and anxiety.
When thinking about your support system, assess your friend situation and think ahead about who will be there for you when you need care. Create the life you want for your next phase. What you want for yourself and where you want to live, among other things, are items to begin considering now.
There are several types of social support: Emotional expressions of empathy, love, trust, and caring; Instrumental tangible aid and service; Informational advice, suggestions, and information; and Appraisal information that is useful for self-evaluation. When we think about getting our needs met as we age, please reach out to your local senior service organizations for support, including your Area Agency on Aging, P.A.C.E., or Meals on Wheels. They are
Figure out what you don’t want, meaning position yourself so that when you are older, you will have as much control of your life as possible. Know your housing options now so you don’t have to make rushed decisions later. You don’t have to act today, but you should have a game plan.
