By: Sherii Sherban, Publisher
The Miles for Memories Community Stroll Celebration activities will kick off
at 10am on Saturday September 14 with a beautiful, musical send off at Wave Square at the corner of Michigan Avenue and McCamly.
You are encouraged to dress for the fun or even bring your noisemakers. People friendly pets are welcome.
inclines, or possibly even a little extra conver- sation during the stroll.
Here we go... there are just a few weeks
to get registered for the Miles for Memories signature event day on September 14 and there is something for everyone that is looking for solutions for those impacted by dementia in Calhoun County.
Visitors can learn about the Miles for Memories safety and prevention programs, reg- ister for Help Home, purchase a personal I.D. bracelet, or sign up for the caregiver retreat that will be held in October.
This event is a perfect opportunity to bring out the residents from a facility, develop a team, or simply support a great local cause. Buses arriving with participants will park along Michigan Avenue and someone will come to you to assist with registration.
New this year... Meet Miles the brain. The new G.P.S. watch will be available for pre-sales for your loved one.
Parking for participants and volunteers is recommended in one of the nearby parking ramps, at the Battle Creek High School parking lot, or even the Kool Family Center parking lot.
Registration and packet pick up for the event is open Saturday September 14 starting at 9am at Wave Square at the corner of Michigan Avenue and McCamly in downtown Battle Creek.
For a new added trip down memory lane, participates will have an opportunity to create and leave a special memory rock along the path for another to find. We hope that as others find them they will take a photo with the special memory rock, share it on Facebook, and move the rock to a new location for another to find. A limited number of painted rocks will be avail- able the day of the walk or you are invited to bring one of your own.
Onsite activities following the community stroll include movement exercises, music
and drumming, canvas painting project, memory rocks, photo booth, lunch, corn hole fun, information regarding new programs, dementia live, a cooling station, and more. There is no cost to participate in any of the activities. All ages are welcome. Pets too.
Individuals can register for the Community Stroll Celebration onsite or online. There is
no cost to participate in the stroll. Donations are welcome. Participates can pre-purchase their shirts with the form online at www.miles- formemories.org to insure they receive one or they can purchase a shirt at the time of registra- tion for $15 while supplies last. The 2019 shirt features a new design to stomp out dementia.
What if you don’t want to walk, run or stroll but you still want to be a part of the festivities? Please come out and volunteer. We have oppor- tunities before the event, during the event and even after the event. One of the areas that will be greatly appreciated will be those that offer to walk with our Community Stroll participants. Extra walkers mean a great opportunity to sup- port those that might need an arm or a hand as they are moving over curbs, up or down slight
Rain or shine we will be celebrating. If need be, we will move inside.
The stroll will kick off with the singing
of the National Anthem, followed by a few announcements, and then we will line up for the stroll behind the big red wagon, students from the Michigan Youth Challenge as well as the Harper Creek Dance Team. The stroll will start at 10:15am from Wave Square. Walkers in the stroll will have the option to turn at the halfway point to complete a half-mile walk or to journey on to travel a full mile. The walk
is not timed and is meant to be a celebration.
For more information please contact Miles for Memories at (269) 979-1412 ext. 305, listen to the Miles for Memories Moment on WBCK Tuesday Mornings at 8:50am, visit the Facebook page, or find the forms on the web- site at www.milesformemories.org.
None of this would be possible without the generous donations from the sponsors and the community. Please share our thanks with them when you get a chance. A complete list will be on display downtown during the event.
Help us make a difference in our communi- ty and create solutions for those impacted by dementia through movement, programming and research on September 14.
