The Importance
Of Primary Care
By: Carolyn Wyllie, Bronson BC
Having a health care provider who knows you and your unique needs can be a big plus when it comes to manag- ing your health. From birth to adoles- cence and adulthood, people of all ages should establish themselves as a patient of a primary care provider.
Primary care providers – including doctors, nurse practitioners, and phy- sician assistants – provide preventive care, annual physicals, and overall health exams as well as treat common medical conditions.
It’s important to have a primary care provider to stay up to date on immunizations, which is especially significant this time of year as flu season begins.
Other medical conditions to see your primary care provider for include:
• Chronic conditions such as asthma,
diabetes, heart disease, and high blood
pressure
• Dermatology services
• Bone and joint care
• Well-woman care and family planning
• Ear, nose, and throat care
• Mental and behavioral health
And, if you have a health condition that requires specialized care, your primary care provider will connect you to a specialist and help coordinate next
steps and follow-up care.
If you do get sick and feel like you
need to see a doctor, call your prima-
ry care provider first. A primary care provider can advise and treat your immediate health needs, such as fevers, colds, ear aches, sinus infections, sore throats (including strep), infections, including urinary tract, and other minor, non-emergency injuries and illnesses.
If you are experiencing chest pain or symptoms of a serious injury or illness, call 911 or go directly to the hospital. For all other needs, call your primary care provider and he or she can advise you on how and where to get the care you need.
If you need a primary care provid- er, call (269) 341-7788 to schedule an appointment at any of Bronson loca- tions. Learn more at bronsonhealth. com/primarycare.
