STROLL WITH MILES FOR MEMORIES ON SEPTEMBER 15
By: Sherii Sherban, Publisher
Here we go... there are just a few weeks to get registered for the Miles for Memories signature event day on September 15 and there is something for everyone that is looking for solutions for those impacted by dementia in Calhoun County.
Registration and packet pick up for the event is open Saturday September 15 starting at 9am at Wave Square at the corner of Michigan Avenue and McCamly in downtown Battle Creek.
The Miles for Memories Community Stroll Celebration activities will kick off at 10am on Saturday September 15 with a beautiful, musi- cal send off at Wave Square at the corner of Michigan Avenue and McCamly.
Individuals can register for the Community Stroll Celebration onsite or online. There is no cost to participate in the stroll. Participates can pre-purchase their shirts online to insure they receive one or they can purchase a shirt at the time of registration for $15 while supplies last. The stroll will kick off with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by a few announce- ments, and then we will line up for the stroll behind the big red wagon, students from the Michigan Youth Challenge, as well as the Harper Creek Dance Team. The stroll will start at 10:15am from Wave Square. Walkers in the stroll will have the option to turn at the halfway point to complete a half-mile walk or to journey on to travel a full mile. The walk is not timed and is meant to be a celebration. You are encouraged to dress for the fun or even bring your noisemakers.
Onsite activities following the community stroll include movement exercises, music and drumming, canvas painting project, memory rocks, photo booth, lunch, information regarding new programs, and more. There is no cost to par- ticipate in any of the activities.
Visitors can also learn about the Miles for
Memories safety and prevention programs, reg- ister for Help Home, purchase a personal I.D. bracelet, or sign up for caregiver research that will be done later in September.
For a new added trip down memory lane, participates that have pre-registered will have
an opportunity to leave a special memory rock along the path for another to find. We hope that as others find them they will take a photo with the special memory rock, share it on Facebook, and move the rock to a new location for another to find. A limited number will also be available the day of the walk or you are invited to bring one of your own.
What if you don’t want to walk, run or stroll but you still want to be a part of the festivities? Please come out and volunteer. We have opportu- nities before the event, during the event and even after the event. One of the areas that will be great- ly appreciated will be those that offer to walk with our Community Stroll participants. Extra walkers mean a great opportunity to support those that might need an arm or a hand as they are moving over curbs, up or down slight inclines, or possibly even a little extra conversation during the stroll.
This event is a perfect opportunity to bring out the residents from a facility, develop a team, or simply support a great local cause. Buses arriv- ing with participants will park along Michigan Avenue and someone will come to you to assist
with registration.
Parking for participants and volunteers is rec-
ommended in one of the nearby parking ramps, at the Battle Creek High School parking lot, or even the Kool Family Center parking lot.
Onsite activities following the community stroll include movement exercises, music and drumming, canvas painting project, memory rocks, photo booth, lunch, information regard- ing new programs, and more. There is no cost to participate in any of the activities. All ages are welcome. Pets too.
Rain or shine we will be celebrating. If need be, we will move inside.
