• Try to make mealtimes an enjoyable,
social event.
• Avoid drinking liquids during meals,
which can make you feel fuller.
• Light exercise can stimulate appetite;
try walking, stretching and yoga.
Mouth sores and dry mouth – Cancer treatment may result in mouth sores, painful red or white patches caused by a weakened immune system, or a dry mouth.
Pick This:
• Added fat, such as nut, butter, or cream.
• Blended or pureed foods, soups, smoothies, yogurt, casseroles, eggs, tender meats, and well-cooked mashed fruits and vegetables.
• Room temperature or cold food.
• Sauces, liquid, broth, or gravy to
moisten food.
• Ice chips, sugarless gum, or hard
candy to moisten mouth.
Skip That:
• Salty, spicy, sugary, acidic foods.
• Rough or coarse foods.
• Ginger, curry, red pepper and strong
spices.
• Do not use store bought mouthwash.
Instead rinse with a simple solution of one teaspoon salt and one teaspoon baking soda mixed in one quart of
water.
Nausea and vomiting – Nausea is
very common during cancer treatments, often accompanied by increased saliva, dizziness, feeling faint, skin tempera- ture changes, and increased heart rate.
Pick This:
• Take anti-nausea and vomiting drugs (antiemetic) 30-60 minutes before meals.
• 5-6 small meals per day – an empty stomach may make nausea and vomit- ing worse.
• Light meal on treatment day.
• Light foods like crackers, toast, or
broth.
• Drink liquids before and after meals –
drinking during meals can make nau-
sea worse.
• Ginger tea, ginger candy, gingersnaps,
ginger root.
• Ice chips or frozen juice chips.
• Use plastic cutlery when eating, rather
than metal silverware.
Skip That:
• Large meals.
• Greasy, spicy food.
• Foods with strong odors.
Keep a log of nausea and vomiting to help determine their causes. Items that can help ease nausea – ginger gum, candy or gingersnaps, saltines, and bland snacks, acupressure wrists bands, plastic bags for sickness.
Taste changes – Treatment and medication can change the way foods taste. Try one of these four simple ways to improve flavor.
If food is: Tasteless or cardboard. Try: Acidic foods. Use acidic flavors like lemon, citrus, vinegar, or pickled foods. Adding sea salt may help.
If food is: Metallic.
Try: Adding fats and flavoring. Add a fat source, such as extra virgin olive oil, nut cream or butter, and try flavoring food with herbs, spices, and condi- ments. Eat room-temperature foods to decrease potent smells, and avoid using metal utensils.
If food is: Salty, bitter or sour. Try: Sweeteners. Add sugar, maple syrup or honey. Adding 1⁄4 teaspoon of lemon juice may decrease the salty flavor.
If food is: Too sweet.
Try: Citrus juice. Start by adding six drops of lemon or lime juice. Keep adding it in small increments until the sweet taste becomes muted.
