MATTERS
Rev. Dr. James Gysel, Special to Senior Times
THANKFULNESS FOR THOSE WHO SERVE
What are you thankful for? It really is a good question to ask in light of
the many things that apparently are going wrong in our world. With the continued Mideast crisis after crisis, the breakdown of the family and poverty
in general. The Federal Government
has spent over $22 billion since 1965, after declaring a “War on poverty,” and the poverty level in this country is the same, or higher in some areas! Hatred and crime are on the rise. And now with the targeting and murder of Christians by Islamic extreme elements like ISIS, you might say that the problems of this world are overwhelming!
But, this is nothing new. There’s always a tyrant acting out his evil;
there is always government plunder and ineptitude; and there’s always imperfect people and even an imperfect Church.
Jesus said there would always be this trouble in the world... “But take heart, I have overcome the trouble.” And maybe this is where we have a key to living in the imperfect world.
In spite of everything that is going
wrong there still is HOPE! There is a Bible you can read that is loaded with promises of Hope. There are people who are acting out their love, both inside and outside of the church. There are wonderful things happening in the world of art and music that can and does lift your spirit and underscores the hope that you feel inside. All of these truly are 'heaven on earth.'
And there are wonderful persons who are serving our Country, our State and our cities that daily serve in the military, law enforcement, and emer- gency services that risk their very lives for the sake of others in crisis.
So when you celebrate this month by going to a parade, a fireworks display,
a picnic or just a quiet thank you in contemplation, remember it’s all made possible by the One who came first to serve, and ones you can’t see with your eyes because they’re already in heaven, or serving on some foreign shore, or waiting to serve when the emergency strikes. You might not be able to see them with your eyes, but your heart knows the truth. Their lives made and make a difference. And yours does too when you commit to serving.
Faithfully yours, Jim Gysel

Telephone Reassurance
Provided to Seniors
By: Pat Fosdick
Approximately a year ago, Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, in conjunction with the Heart of the Village program, initiated what is called Telephone Reassurance for folks who are in need
and appreciate daily contact. Sometimes it is
a daily call to confirm that all is well and there are no immediate or emergency needs on the part of the individual being called. Other times it may be a weekly call that involves
a little longer
conversation, because there is a longing and need for social contact. Whichever it may be, there were dedicated call-
ers and thankful recipients that came together recently for the opportunity to meet each other face-to-face, have lunch
and enjoy each other’s company. Pictured is Nancy Anderson, one
of the participants in the Telephone Reassurance, who is surrounded by several of the volunteer callers, who
she hears from on their assigned day, and the Rev. David Morton, program coordinator.
The Telephone Reassurance Program is open
to anyone in need of regular contact. Volunteer callers are also welcomed. If you would like to participate in the Telephone
Reassurance Program in either capac- ity, please call Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, (269) 963-0231. You will receive a follow-up call from Judy Phelps, Telephone Reassurance Chairperson.
