to get a front row seat to whoever’s turn
it was to open a gift. We always start-
ed the gift exchange with our gag gifts. Each one was presented individually and almost always required some explanation, background, or story. This was before the days of being able to search gag gifts on Amazon and being flooded with thou- sands of choices. Our gag gifts required thought and a great deal of discussion amongst people in our immediate house- hold. “What do you think about this idea for Uncle Doug?” “Would Aunt Carolyn think this was funny?” You get the idea.
What made the gag gifts so enjoy- able? For me, it was listening to the ex- planation of each gift before it was given. Sitting on the floor, trying to figure out what it might be was a delightful internal game. I remember each of my relative’s voices. The tone. The cadence. The style of their expression. The sound of their laugh. You never forget the voices of your youth. Part of the fun was the anticipation of giving the perfect gag gift, one that you had put so much thought into. When the moment finally came to present the gift it was as much fun for the giver as it was for the receiver. To this day, I do not know why this event took on such enormity in our family, but it held a depth and impor- tance and joy that still impacts us today.
The gag gift tradition faded out as many traditions eventually do. The younger gen- eration grew up and had children of their own. Gathering in the same manner simply
became too complicated to manage. New traditions were formed which are equally as cherished and loved and are as much
a part of me as the old ones, but nothing can compare to childhood traditions. Tra- ditions from the past hold a fondness and nostalgia that are woven so deeply into who we are. Sometimes they define the special moments of our lives and some- times they sit quietly in the corner, but they are in every pulse of our hearts.
Some of our family members are no longer with us. It has been a year of loss that has left our family achingly aware of
precious memories and traditions. Our reminiscing will be a mix of tears and laughter. We will talk about past gag gifts, debate the details and somehow every- one will seem to remember things just a little differently.
At some point over the years, I began to view our tradition as a gift. The gift of the gag. A gift of laughter and memories which everyone knows is the best type of gift. This year, we will work to remember that new traditions can be born at unlikely times and in unlikely places, like a forgot- ten box in an old attic.
