Battle Creek Community Foundation Renames Fund in Honor of Long-Time Volunteer
Due to her tireless efforts in the fight for racial equity, The Battle Creek Community Foundation has renamed the Racial Healing and Equity Fund in honor of community leader and Battle Creek Community Foundation Trustee, Dorothy McClendon, who passed away in May of this year.
The newly renamed Dorothy McClendon Racial Healing and Equity Fund aims to change hierarchical human value based on race through encouragement of a change of narrative, sustained racial healing and the building of community practices for structural change through use of the Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation framework.
“Dorothy was committed to the ideals of racial equality and the value of continuing the conversations needed to achieve that goal in our community and beyond. The Dorothy McClendon Racial Healing and Equity Fund will allow BCCF to continue working toward the goals Dorothy so cherished.” Commented Tom McClendon, her husband of 56 years.
It is especially appropriate for McClendon’s name to be forever linked to the fund in light of her devotion to and championing of local racial equity efforts, serving as a representative for BCCF on the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Initiative Heart Campaign and as a founding member of the Sacred Conversations on Race Book Club.
Dorothy volunteered for 25 years with the Battle Creek Community Foundation, becoming a Trustee and serving on many committees including the Fund for Battle Creek, Governance, the William E. and Marion G. Stuckle Advisory Committee and the Clifton V. Bullock Minority Education Committee, of which she was a founding member.
She was a fervent advocate in making Battle Creek a more racially equitable and educated place. This year Dorothy will remain on all Battle Creek Community Foundation materials as a Trustee, in honor of her tireless dedication and effort for our community.
