is appointed when there are no family members or close friends to serve in the necessary capacity and make decisions on behalf of the ward, or if no other per- son is competent, suitable, and willing to do so.
GFAS provides guardianship services 24 hours per day, seven days per week. We employ six professional guardians who operate out of two offic- es, one in Battle Creek and the other in Kalamazoo. We meet with our clients at their residences or care facilities, allow- ing us to ensure their comfort and see them in their own environments. This also enables our workers to observe and assess our clients’ living conditions and overall well-being.
Some adults need help taking care
of themselves or making informed decisions due to mental health issues, dementia, traumatic brain injuries, developmental disabilities, substance abuse, or other frailties. Those who suffer from such ailments and inca- pacities are often more vulnerable to homelessness, food insecurity, improper
Guardian appointments are made by the Probate Court and are based on pe- titions and/or referrals from a variety of sources like the Department of Human Services (DHS), Adult Protective Ser- vices (APS), Community Mental Health (CMH), local hospitals, nursing homes, community service organizations, and family members or friends, among others. a nonprofit, part of our mission is to accept any client who needs our support and services, regardless of their incomes and abilities to pay. Ninety percent of our current clients have incomes below the 150 percent poverty line, for exam- ple, and we offer them the same care and attention we would give to someone with the ability to pay for our aid. We are a human-centric organization, after all, and we truly believe that enabling others to live at their optimal indepen- dence levels is important.

Our services are supported by client fees, but donations are needed to ensure our at-risk and indigent adult clients receive their basic needs of food, cloth- ing, shelter, and medical care. There would be no one to advocate for those in poverty who have no family and/or friends to help with their care if public guardians did not exist. These individ- uals would likely go homeless, suffer without care or medical intervention, face food insecurity, unnecessarily end up in acute care hospitals, and possibly even find themselves spending time
in jail without a public fiduciary like GFAS.
