A beloved holiday tradition at Binder Park Zoo celebrates a milestone this year – ZooBoo is thirty years old! It would be rare to find someone who doesn’t have a special memory of ZooBoo. For a child, it might be a bonus chance to wear their Hallow- een costume, being awed by the scores of flickering jack-o-lanterns and spooky dis- plays, the thrill of trick-or-treating, or the rare opportunity to see the zoo animals in their exhibits at dusk. For the grown-ups, it was surely a magical time and place to cre- ate treasured family memories and to savor the days of childhood because as we know, “They grow up all too fast”.
A generation is defined as the average period, generally considered to be about thirty years, during which children are born and grow up, become adults, and be- gin to have children of their own. Today, we have the first ZooBoo-goers returning with their own youngsters and in many cases with their parents as well – three generations continuing a tradition that they

enjoyed thirty years ago. Some things just seem to stand the test of time and it appears that ZooBoo is one of them.
Of course, all things evolve over time. Family life has changed, the community has changed and so has Binder Park Zoo. Supported by an enthusiastic community, the zoo has grown extensively. In the last twenty years a Conservation Education Center, a 40-acre natural wetlands exhibit, 50-acre Wild Africa exhibit, and Conser- vation Carousel have been added to the original zoo and most recently the open- ing of the African Lion exhibit capped a
multi-year, multi-exhibit capital campaign. These assets uniquely position the zoo to fulfill our mission to Connect. Inspire. Conserve. Connect people with nature. In- spire them to conserve. Learning programs like zoo camps, overnights and Zoomobile engage and impact kids of all ages. Special fundraising events like Bonteboktoberfest and ZooLights attract adults and families alike to enjoy a fun, memorable experience in a beautiful and natural setting.
ZooBoo 2017 begins with the annual Pumpkin Carve on Tuesday, October 17, from 4-7pm under the Pine picnic pavilion. Free to the public, pumpkins, carving tools and refreshments will be provided – guests need only bring their imagination to carve a jack-o-lantern masterpiece!
New this year is the Scarecrow BOO-le- vard contest! Open to families, individuals, businesses or clubs, there are only 20 spots along the boulevard entrance to construct a family-friendly scarecrow display that will be judged by public vote. The top two win prizes. The entry fee is $10 and the deadline to enter is October 14th. Full contest details can be found at www.bind-
ZooBoo runs October 19-29; Thurs- day and Friday 4-8pm and Saturday and Sunday 1-8pm (closed Monday through Wednesday). Admission is $9 per person for zoo members and $10 for non-mem- bers and can be purchased at the gate. Ad- mission includes unlimited train, carousel and hayrides, Trick-or-Treat Trail, life-size games, disc golf and the Wild Science Zone with six spooky learning themes. Also included in the price of admission are a series of exciting stage shows each evening at the Wildlife Discovery Theater with performances by a puppeteer/ventril- oquist, magic acts, the Imagination Sta- tion, a rockin’ DJ dance party, Story Time and “Minute-to-Win-it”. The Boo-ville Carnival is back (.25 per ticket or $1 for 5) and paintball ($5 per game), too.
