o’Brien, new Postmaster Battle creek Post office
By SHERII SHERBAN
Our new Postmaster, Edward O’Brien, has been on board in Battle Creek since April. O’Brien in not new to the industry, however.
O’Brien was first interested in the Post Office after having served for four years in the United States Navy as an aviation electronics technician, 3rd class Petty Officer. He worked on the communication and navigation systems for the F-14 and F-18.
In addition, he was active with
the Flying Riffles drill team and
the Miramar San Diego Funeral
Detail.
The Veteran’s continuation of government service program al- lowed O’Brien to look for a po- sition that would honor his pre- vious years of military service. The Post Office was perfect; his federal employment continued, it offered a secure retirement op- tion along with endless opportu- nities. He started in Jackson at the DDC (Distribution and De- livery Center) August 15, 1998. His line of service actually in- cludes eight locations and 18 years later, he is now enjoying Battle Creek, Michigan.
What might the role of the postmaster be? In this case
O’ Brien is responsible for
the operation of an official mail-pro- cessing unit. His goal is to operate an efficient site with all the mail options needed for our community with en- gaged employees that are productive and happy. When the customer comes
in they can expect service that is posi- tive and responsive.
In addition to internal responsibil- ities, he also is active in promoting the services of the Post Office to the com- munity. One such program is EDDM – Every Door Direct Mail, a new busi- ness-mailing program that targets neigh- borhoods. This unique service will gen-
Surprisingly enough, when done right, the single sheet EDDM can often be delivered cheaper than using bulk mail. This kind of a marketing piece can be very beneficial during campaign seasons, or to promote an event to a very specific area or neighborhood. Reach out to the Post Office for more details on how this might work for your event or business at
(269) 965-3286 or 1-800-ASK- USPS (275-8777).
According to O’Brien, the Post Office can often be one of the most efficient choices. Un- less your item is over 35 pounds, starting at the Post Office might be the best way to send those holiday boxes that are sure to be sent in just a few weeks. More importantly, it gets great ratings. For more than ten years the Post Office has been voted the most trusted government agency.
Our Battle Creek Post Office has 130 employees; approxi- mately 100 of those are carriers (but only 82 routes). This Post Office serves Augusta, Bedford and Battle Creek, which in- cludes nearly 46,000 homes and businesses. An individual carri- er could handle 1,500 to 4,500 pieces of mail per day depend- ing on the day of the week. If
you guessed that Monday is the heaviest day, you would be correct.
New business relationships at the Post Office include an arrangement with Amazon and they are now delivering on Sundays. As a result, package deliv- ery has gone up significantly, especially since Battle Creek acts a hub for several surrounding communities as well.
Edward has been married for 14 years and has two sons, 10 and 13. Both play football and swim. It’s one of the reasons that O’Brien enjoys being an assistant coach for 4th grade football in Eaton Rapids.
O’Brien is very interested in being involved in the community. Locally he is active with the VFW. Beyond that, he is looking for new ways to get involved. Please join us in welcoming Edward O’Brien to our community.
erally have your direct mail piece out the door the very next day. This particular service does not even require a mailing list. The EDDM promotional piece can easily be utilized by a collection of busi- nesses as well, such as a coupon mailer.
