What You need to Know about Protecting Yourself from the Flu
By RICHARD VAN ENK, PHD., Dir. of Infection Prevention, Bronson Healthcare
It’s that time of year again! Flu sea- son is underway, but you can make sure it doesn’t in- terrupt your life. Coming down with the flu can keep us
from work, school and time with family and friends. One of the easiest ways to protect yourself from the flu is getting the flu vaccine.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends everyone six months or older get a flu vaccine. It’s especially important for children, preg- nant women, older adults and those with weakened immune systems. But even healthy adults need to get the vaccine, too.
New this year, the CDC‘s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that the nasal spray vac- cine, LAIV,FluMist® should not be given to patients for the 2016-2017 flu season. Based on new studies, the mist had little effect against the main strain of flu. The flu shot, however, was still effective.
In addition to getting your flu vaccine this year, be sure to take care of your- self and stop the spread of germs. There
are many ways to stay healthy and boost your immune system:
• Wash your hands
• Get plenty of rest
• Exercise • Eat well
If you do come down with the flu, re- member to stay home from work, school or other group activities. Being out and about is not only bad for the person with the flu, but also those around you.
Overall, the best way to handle the flu is to prevent it. Even if getting vaccinat- ed doesn’t provide complete protection, it’s better than no vaccine at all.
Schedule an appointment to receive your flu shot with your primary care provider today. If you do not have a pri- mary care provider, Bronson ProHealth – Battle Creek at 265 Fremont St. has the seasonal flu vaccine available for the community. Visit for a Bronson flu vaccine
location near you.
