Private apartments have a full kitchen and bath, come in various sizes, and usually include a limited meal plan. For an additional fee, you may be able to arrange for housekeeping, laundry, and other services. Other amenities could include exercise and social rooms, entertainment, group trips, and other important options such as transportation to doctor%u2019s appointments or shopping. Many offer call systems for emergency services. You may also choose an apartment complex, town house, or condominium community that is not specific to aging adults but offers the opportunity to get to know those near you as well as eliminate many of the exterior responsibilities that can make living on your own challenging. Subsidized Senior Housing %u2013 There are state and federal programs that help pay for housing for aging adults with low to moderate incomes. Some of these housing programs also offer help with meals and other activities like housekeeping, shopping, and laundry. Residents usually live in their own apartments within an apartment building. Rent payments are based on income. Rent will not exceed 30 percent of your monthly income. Long waiting lists are typical for subsidized housing in some areas. Many of the in-home services are also available to people living in subsidized senior housing. A listing of independent facilities can be found on page 16. Services in Your HomeHelp is available for you to stay in your own home, no matter where you may call home. Paying for in-home services can become complicated and expensive but when done well can be an affordable long-term option. No private insurance or government agency pays for around-theclock, in-home care. Most government programs and insurance policies pay for short, daily, or weekly visits or services. Even hospice care is intermittent. But with help from others, coverage for those with varying needs can be met each day, week, or month. Be sure to reach out to family members, friends, churches, volunteers, and public and private agencies. Payment for in-home services will vary depending upon the provider.Some services are available at little or no cost for those who qualify by your Area Agency on Aging, PACE, VA, Medicare, Medicaid, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and other sources. Medicaid pays for some health care costs for lowincome individuals of any age.
